Stone Mountain is commonly referred to as one of the largest exposed pieces of granite in the world, and is more than five miles in circumference at its base. The top of Stone Mountain reaches 1,686 feet and is covered with bare rock and fresh-water rock pools.
Stone Mountain is also well known for its enormous relief on its north face, the largest bas-relief (sculptural carving) in the world. The carving depicts three historical figures from the Confederacy: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis.
